Synthesis of Quaternary, Long‐Chain N‐Alkyl Amides and Their Corrosion Inhibition in Acidic Media

Abstract: New cationic surfactants were synthesized by the quaternization of a number of straight‐chain amide derivatives with triethylamine or pyridine. The corrosion inhibition tests of the surface‐active compounds were performed at room temperature for 24 h on carbon steel coupons in acidic media using the gravimetric method. The acidic media used were 1.5 M HCl and 1.5 M H2SO4. Almost all of the synthesized cationic surfactants showed efficient inhibition of corrosion in the test. To establish the inhibition efficie… Show more

“…The corrosion test in acidic medium was performed using the coupons made from cold‐rolled low‐carbon steel, possessing DIN EN 10130 special conditions (DIN Standard, ). Their composition was 0.07% C, 0.35% Mn, 0.015% P, and 0.015% S. The corrosion tests of the compounds 2a and 2b were performed in 1.0 M HCl solution according to the protocol described previously in the literature (Öztürk et al, ).…”

“…Thus, double layered or multilayered protective layers are formed which act as a barrier between the metal surface and the acidic corrosive medium (13). It is known that non-polar interactions between the long alkyl chains in the molecule increase in parallel with the concentration of surfactant (14). Therefore, as the concentration increases, the inhibition efficiency of the surface active compound against corrosion also increases.…”

“…The induced negative charge on the metal surface is provided by the formation of dipoles on the surface. These dipoles arise as a result of attachment to the positively charged metal surface of negatively charged halogen ions from the acidic medium by electrostatic attraction (13,14). Due to the dipoles formed on the surface, the aromatic surface-active di-cationic surfactants can be easily attached to the metal surface which becomes negatively charged.…”

“…23 Many compounds with anticorrosive activity have been synthesized, but they are not directly applied to biodiesel. [24][25][26][27][28] Some of these compounds are aromatic Schiff bases, which could be used as corrosion inhibitors because they contain conjugated unsaturation and heteroatoms. Soltani et al 29 synthesized two aromatic Schiff bases N,N'-bis(salicylaldehyde)benzidine (SBA) and N,N'-bis(5-nitrosalicyldiene)benzidine (SBB), to inhibit corrosion of carbon steel by acid.…”
