Synthesis of Self-Healing Waterborne Polyurethane Systems Chain Extended with Chitosan

Abstract: In this study, the self-healing properties of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) were implemented by chitosan as a chain extender of polyurethane prepolymers. The physical properties and self-healing efficiency of WPU were studied by changing the molar fractions of chitosan from 0.1 to 0.3. After thermal treatment for 24 h at 110 °C, the self-healing efficiency for the tensile strength of the highest chitosan content (WPU-C3) was found to be 47%. The surface scratch was also completely restored. The efficiency of t… Show more

“…Due to the need to reduce carbon footprint, as well as achieving high standard in building and construction industries, employing G-WBEC coatings can help reduce or perhaps eradicate the effect of combustion, as graphene possess excellent fire-resistant properties. Also, G-WBEC can offer stronger coatings in buildings, ponds, drainages, tunnels and tubes by serving as anti-corrosion [265], antibacterial [279], self-healing (anti-scratch) coatings [248], [280], as well as water-resistant liners [281] and fire-resistant [220] systems for possible cladding application. Additionally, there is great possibility of employing G-WBEC as multifunctional smart materials for wall interiors and exteriors, as well as roof tops, woods, concretes and paper coatings.…”

“…The range of application of TPU film is severely limited because of these problems [9][10][11][12]. Inspired by the repair function of organisms, the self-healing function of polymer materials to repair damaged materials has become a focus of research [13][14][15][16][17][18]. Because it can not only extend the life cycle of materials, increase the reuse rate of materials, reduce maintenance costs, but also play an extremely important role in saving resources and reducing energy consumption.…”

“…However, the poor mechanical properties and low thermal stability of WPUs are still shortcomings for their practical applications [ 17 , 18 ]. Therefore, the modification of the physical properties of WPUs via the addition of nanofillers to WPU solutions to form robust composites [ 19 , 20 ] or via the incorporation of functional materials as chain extenders during WPU preparation has been widely studied [ 21 ].…”
