Synthesis of small diameter silver nanowires via a magnetic-ionic-liquid-assisted polyol process

Abstract: Silver nanowires (Ag NWs) with a small diameter of 20 nm and aspect ratio of 1000 were synthesized using the polyol method in the presence of a magnetic ionic liquid: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate.

“…Efforts have been devoted into synthesizing UTAgNWs, for example, a high-pressure hydrothermal process was proposed to synthesize AgNWs with a diameter in the range of 15–20 nm, a magnetic ionic liquid-assisted polyol method was used to synthesize UTAgNWs with an average diameter of 20 nm, benzoin-derived radicals were employed as a mild reducing agent to synthesize UTAgNWs with an average diameter down to 13 nm, and a light-emitting diode illumination-stimulated growth method was reported to synthesize UTAgNWs with diameter further down to 9 nm . It is still difficult to scale-up the production of UTAgNWs using these methods.…”

“…Herein, Ag NWs with a diameter of 25 nm and aspect ratios as high as 1500 were directly synthesized through the modified polyol method via the via the chemical reduction of AgNO 3 (Aldrich) in the presence of a magnetic ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate (bmim[FeCl 4 ]), using a previously reported method [ 26 ]. The synthesized Ag NWs were dispersed in an aqueous solution (0.3 wt % in H 2 O) with a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (average molecular weight, Mw = 1,300,000, Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, USA) polymer surfactant.…”

“…Finally, the supernatant was collected to obtain an acid-treated pure SWCNT mono-disperse solution. Ag NWs with an average diameter of 20 nm and a length of 20 µm were directly synthesized according to the magnetic-ionic-liquid-assisted polyol process [34]. As-synthesized Ag NW was re-dispersed in 0.5 wt% DI water and prepared in an aqueous suspension solution.…”
