In the present work, microwave-assisted coprecipitation route was used for synthesis of nanocrystalline zinc ferrite and results were compared with conventionally prepared zinc ferrite. Synthesis conditions were kept uniform in both cases, except that the mode of heating was changed. The effects of mode of heating on the material properties were studied systematically. Microstructures of both samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and the particle size was found to be in the range of 3-4 nm. Particle size distribution in microwaveprocessed MS-ZnFe 2 O 4 is found to be highly uniform compared to conventionally processed samples (CS-ZnFe 2 O 4 ). XRD data confirmed the presence of single-phase face-centered cubic structure for both the samples. The XRD data fitted well with Reitveld refinement. The functional groups were analyzed by FT-IR. Local distortions in the structures were studied by FT-Raman spectra of zinc ferrites at room temperature. This study concludes that the microwaveassisted synthesis route reduced the time of reaction by around 23 h and developed uniformly distributed fine-scaled particles. This method has high potential to synthesize other ferrite materials also.

ZnFe₂O₄ Nanocrystals: Synthesis and Magnetic Properties

Ferromagnetic zinc ferrite nanocrystals at ambient temperature were synthesized via the thermal decomposition of metal-surfactant complexes. Characterization measurements including transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were performed for as-synthesized ZnFe 2 O 4 particles. The sample has a relatively narrow size distribution with an average particle size of 9.8 ( 0.2 nm and standard deviation of 30%. The assynthesized zinc ferrite nanocrystals are superparamagnetic at room temperature with a blocking temperature T B ) 68 ( 2 K and a saturation magnetization M S ) 65.4 emu‚g -1 at T ) 10 K, which are caused by the change in the inversion degree of the spinel structure. A coercive field of H C ) 102 ( 5 Oe in the blocked state indicates small particle anisotropy, although evidence of surface spin canting was inferred from magnetization data in the as-synthesized ZnFe 2 O 4 nanocrystals. Our results demonstrate that magnetic properties of magnetic particles can be largely modified by just changing particle size, which might be a useful way to design novel magnetic materials.
