Synthesis, properties, and gas permeability of novel poly(diarylacetylene) derivatives

Abstract: Poly(diphenylacetylene)s having various silyl groups are soluble in common solvents, from whose membranes poly(diphenylacetylene) membranes can be obtained by desilylation. The oxygen permeability coefficients of the desilylated polymers are quite different from one another (120-3300 barrers) irrespective of the same polymer structure. When bulkier silyl groups are removed, the oxygen permeability increases to larger extents. Poly[1-aryl-2-p-(trimethylsilyl)phenylacetylene]s are soluble in common solvents, and… Show more

“…Polysulfones are widely used as polymeric membrane materials, and their permeation study for various gases has been well explored . Although the effect of long alkyl chains on the gas permeation characteristics of polymeric membranes is well explored, very few reports describe the effect of the presence of long alkyl chains on the permeation properties of polysulfones . In the present study, it was therefore considered worthwhile to study the effect of pendent pentadecyl chains on the permeation behavior of synthesized poly(ether sulfone).…”

“…8 Thus, poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) and poly(1-(p-trimethylsilyl)phenyl-2-phenylacetylene) are promising materials for gas separation membranes, and a large number of poly(diphenylacetylene)s have been synthesized so far. 10- 13 On the other hand, the incorporation of polar groups into a polymer is of interest as membranes that separate carbon dioxide from light gases (e.g., N 2 , H 2 and CH 4 ), because the polymers containing polar groups tend to show high CO 2 permselectivity. This is because polar groups in the polymer membranes interact with CO 2 molecules, and the membranes preferentially dissolve CO 2 molecules.…”

“…Gas permeable polymers have been extensively studied because of their promising application in gas separation membrane 1–5. A huge array of polymers such as substituted polyacetylenes,6–8 polyimides,9–12 polysulfones,13–15 polycarbonates16–18 have been studied as materials for gas separation membrane. The main chains of these polymers are composed of double bonds, aromatic rings, etc., and they are rigid and restricted in rotation.…”
