Synthesized multi-walled carbon nanotubes as a potential adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue dye: kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics

Abstract: A B S T R A C TMulti-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are a highly effective adsorbent of methylene blue (MB), and they can be used to remove MB from aqueous solutions. In this study, we used MWCNTs that were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition method. The physicochemical properties of MWCNTs were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, surface functional group analysis by fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, zero point charge (pH zpc ), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission… Show more

“…Besides that, no peaks related to Pd or Au were found, indicating either the small size of the Pd and Au particles or their X-ray amorphous structure. Diffraction lines belonging to the support (2θ = 25.7, 44.3, 54, 78) correspond to graphite with a hexagonal lattice, in agreement with the literature data [36,37].…”

“…High costs and the limited capacities of various technologies, e.g., advanced oxidation and photodegradation, also put restrictions on their applications. Adsorption is a feasible treatment for dye pollution with high efficiency, low cost, and easy operation. , The adsorption of dyes onto different adsorbents has already been studied, while the interactions between different dyes and their adsorption behaviors on adsorbents have barely been investigated, because most studies have been performed in single dye systems. , However, real water pollution tends to contain more than one type of dyes and shows various adsorption mechanisms and behaviors, which can influence the adsorption capacities and equilibrium time.…”

“…The XRD pattern displayed in SM2a exhibit various diffraction peaks accounting for the crystalline hexagonal structure of carbon as referenced in (JCPDS 26-1076)[35,36]. The intense (006) peak located at 26° suggests dominant exposure of these planes in the sample[37,38]. Interestingly, the main peak (006) as shown in SM2(a-d) is present in all XRD patterns of CNTs and CNT-Dye nanohybrids which indicate that the hexagonal structure of carbon nanomaterial is maintained after covalent surface modification with dyes.…”
