Syringoid Eccrine Carcinoma

Abstract: Syringoid eccrine carcinomas (SECs) are rare adnexal neoplasms that may display aggressive local recurrence and occasional metastases. This report describes three cases of SEC treated by Mohs micrographic surgery.

“…A review of the literature indicates a high rate of local recurrence (10%-70%) 2,3 and subsequent metastasis (up to 60%) 4 following conventional surgical excision of these tumors (Table 1). [5][6][7] Although the utility of Mohs micrographic surgery has been well documented for microcystic adnexal carcinoma, experience with other subtypes is limited. A propensity for poorly circumscribed growth and anatomically challenging locations such as the head and neck (microcystic adnexal carcinoma, hidradenocarcinoma) and acral locations (eccrine porocarcinoma) suggests that Mohs micrographic surgery may result in tissue sparing and decreased recurrence.…”

“…A few convincing examples of SEC have been reported since the initial report by Freeman and Winkelmann in 1969. 1 To our knowledge, 35 cases have been reported under the name of SEC, [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] sweat gland carcinoma with syringomatous features, 14 and eccrine epithelioma. 1,[15][16][17][18][19] Most of the lesions (19 cases) showed infiltrating plaques occurring on the scalp, 1-3,5-8,10,11,13,15,16,18 while eight cases were located on the extremities, 2,4,9,17,19 two cases on the back 2 and cheek, 2,6 and one case each on the ear, 2 eyebrow, 8 neck, 1 upper lip, 19 thorax, 12 and abdomen.…”
