SummaryThis paper addresses the enhanced identification and localization of structural damage by means of the recorded response induced by ambient excitation. Damage detection is based purely on the vibration energy in structural acceleration records, deriving thereof the normalized cumulative power spectral density as the characteristic damage sensitive quantity. As key aspect of this contribution, a method for "correction" of the recorded response is proposed, to account for deviations from perfect stationary white noise excitation. Based on an overdetermined system of equations, recorded spectra are modified to better fit previously recorded spectra. This fitting affects broader frequency ranges, while the damage sensitive feature captures changes in narrow frequency bands. Thus, the proposed "correction" method does not mask or remove the effects of structural changes in the response. Subsequent damage localization in cantilever-like structures is based on the changes of the drift of the fundamental mode shape amplitudes. The efficiency of the proposed two-step damage identification procedure is tested on a small-scale shear frame model in various damaged conditions. It is shown that the defined normalized cumulative power spectral density damage index is suitable to indicate most of the imposed damages, in particular when the proposed response correction methodology is applied. The spots of damage are successfully identified by the utilized mode shape damage indicator.

Quickly and accurately identifying structural status after natural disasters plays crucial roles in disaster rescue. Previously, the authors developed a substructure identification method for shear structures, which uses the frequency responses of short structural acceleration responses to estimate structural parameters inductively. However, the numerical studies found that the method could only provide moderately accurate results. In this paper, a thorough uncertainty analysis is performed to reveal the key factors that influence its identification accuracy. Based on these results, a new substructure method is proposed herein, which utilizes the cross power spectrum densities of structural responses, estimated by the multi-taper method, to formulate substructure identification problems. The error analysis is also conducted for the multi-taper method based method, explaining why this method can significantly improve identification accuracy, compared with the frequency response based method. Moreover, although the multi-taper method based method is originally derived based on stationary structural responses, a further analysis shows that it can be extended to non-stationary responses, greatly broadening the method’s application range. Finally, the simulation study of a 20-story shear structure and the shake table tests on a three-story bench-scaled structure are conducted, which verified that the proposed multi-taper method based method indeed significantly improves the substructure identification accuracy.

SUMMARY This paper discusses the realization of dynamic excitations that are used to complete finite element model updating, based on the selective sensitivity approach. It is explained how structures with many DOFs respond in desired parameter (in‐) sensitive output patterns and how such patterns can be achieved without substantial previous theoretical knowledge. The excitation of selective sensitive response patterns has been defined in the literature as the fundamental requirement to perform parameter (in‐) sensitive model updating. Up to now, the practical generation of selective sensitive response patterns on existing and possible complex structures has been questionable. Consequently, in this paper, a major effort is dedicated to overcome this problem and to provide an excitation approach that can be realized in practice. In a test example, the system parameters of a continuous steel beam are identified, taking into account the minimum excitation configuration given by four available electro dynamic shakers.
