Systematic approach for the analysis of the electromagnetic environment inside a building during lightning strike

Abstract: This paper defines a systematic approach considering the lightning current at the base of the channel as input function, the spatial distribution of the electromagnetic (EM) field inside the building, or the overvoltages induced at the open ends of loops as output functions. A parametric analysis of the influence of the lightning protection system on the output functions is carried out in frequency domain. The systematic approach allows one to take into account the probabilistic nature of the input function, w… Show more

“…Therefore, it is mainly compared that the equations (14) and (15) τ 2 is within the order of 10 4 , 1 τ 1 is in the order of 10 6 , and 1 τ 1 τ 2 is in the order of 10 10 . Thus, equations (14) and (15) can be reduced to equations (16) and (17).…”

“…Sensitive electronic devices inside buildings might be impaired by lightning, and it is therefore important to be able to predict the expected lightning electromagnetic pulse (LEMP) characteristics in order to design effective lightning protection methodologies on the basis of the concept of lightning protection zones (LPZs) [1]. Traditionally, transmission-line (TL) theory-based simulation techniques have been used to analyze lightning surge phenomena [2][3][4][5]. However, these simulation techniques were developed based on the assumption of transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode propagation, an assumption that is not straightforwardly applicable for surge analysis in three-dimensional structures such as buildings.…”
