Systematic Review of Studies Examining Transtibial Prosthetic Socket Pressures with Changes in Device Alignment

Abstract: Suitable lower-limb prosthetic sockets must provide an adequate distribution of the pressures created from standing and ambulation. A systematic search for articles reporting socket pressure changes in response to device alignment perturbation was carried out, identifying 11 studies. These were then evaluated using the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists guidelines for a state-of-the-science review. Each study used a design where participants acted as their own controls. Results were available for … Show more

“…To our knowledge, this study constitutes the first examination of changes in subject-specific gait biomechanics based on environmental weather conditions. These findings also support the efficacy of wearable technology, and subsequent data science approaches for understanding the complexities of running gait patterns based on collecting data in out-of-laboratory environments [ 29 , 35 ].…”

“…This aspect has to be optimized considering the rotation and translation of each component in the different planes, according to the physiological lines. The state-of-theart about alignment variations in transtibial amputees has been reviewed by Neumann et al [35] and Davenport et al [36]. They evidenced that a wrong alignment can affect several kinematic parameters, as well as the pressure distribution at the stump/socket interface.…”

“…These sensors can be used to detect hand gestures. Piezoelectric pressure sensors are used for surface mechanomyography (sMMG) to recognize gestures [ 83 ]. Since the palm side of the wrist deflects noticeably during finger flexion gestures, the deflections can be measured using an array of piezoelectric contact sensors.…”
