Systematic review: plantar fasciitis and prolonged weight bearing

Abstract: This systematic review found low-quality evidence of an association between PF and weight-bearing tasks such as walking and standing on hard surfaces. The only occupations specifically identified as having higher risk were those associated with the engine assembly plant. Further research is required to fully determine the association between weight bearing and PF.

“…An average adult takes between 5,000 and 10,000 steps each day (men: an average of 7,192 steps per day; women: an average of 5,210 steps per day) (Tudor-Locke and Bassett 2004). One common problem that arises in physical activity is inflammation of the plantar fascia (Waclawski et al 2015). The plantar fascia is one of the most important parts of the foot supporting the arch of the foot to protect the foot during walking, jumping and running.…”

“…According to a systematic review, the proportion of time standing on hard surfaces and walking is associated with an increased risk of plantar fasciitis 17) . A study reported that nurses walked for a long distance during the work, with an average of 4.20 miles (6.7 km) across a 12-h day shift and 3.95 miles (6.3 km) during a 12-h night shift 32) .…”

“…The occurrence of plantar fasciitis is usually associated with work-related prolonged weight-bearing. People involved in occupations that require continual standing or walking, such as waiters, maids, kitchen workers, athletics, and military personnel, are at a higher risk of developing plantar fasciitis [16][17][18] . Several studies have focused on the relationship between the risk of plantar fasciitis and specific occupations 17,18) .…”

“…Pain is usually limited to the posterior part of the foot, under the heel. It is exacerbated while taking the fi rst few steps aft er longer inactivity (Waclawski, Beach, Milne, Yacyshyn, & Dryden, 2015). Th e origin of the pain is the plantar fascia, a connective tissue spanning from the inferior surface of the calcaneus towards the bones in the front of the foot.…”
