Systematic study of interfacial interactions between clays and an ionomer

Abstract: To study the interfacial interactions between an ionomer [poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) neutralized by zinc salts (PI)] and clays, PI-clay nanocomposites were prepared using a solution method. Two types of commercially available montmorillonite clays respectively K10 and KSF were used, and were modified with organic modifiers with chain lengths of 12-18 carbons. The interactions between the PI, clays, and modifiers were evaluated through study of the structure, morphology, and properties of the PI-clay nanoco… Show more

“…For instance, the IR band at 918 cm −1 moved slightly to 914 cm −1 with an enhanced intensity, which indicates an increase in the mass of the molecules due to silver nanoparticles-MMT clay interaction. The MMT/Ag nanocomposite spectra showed a new absorption band near 3150 cm −1 , which is an indication of the interaction between silver nanoparticles and the O-H functional group in the MMT layers [29,41].…”

“…The fact that these two samples are more filled than the others can explain this observation: the big calcium-carbonate aggregates can hinder the cluster formation by inserting in the cluster phase. [28][29][30][31] The PS (0.7) peak extends from 3.8 to 4.3 2h range, i.e. 20.5 to 23.2 Å .…”

“…Most of them treat the plasticizing and filling effects of functional organic salts. [28][29][30][31] Even if this field has been developed in the last years, most of the studies are about ionomeric rubber, and the ionic effect of the fillers is investigated only to achieve a better dispersion. Thus, they introduce more free volume to the cluster regions without affecting the amount of the cluster regions.…”
