Systemic Candidosis in Dogs Associated with Canine Distemper Virus

Abstract: Background: Candidosis is an opportunistic fungal infection caused by yeasts of the genus Candida, which normally reside on the surfaces of the mucous membranes and in the skin of several animal species and healthy humans; however the fungi can convert into pathogenic microorganisms and result in invasive infections with systemic involvement due to the impairment of the immune system. Systemic candidosis is rare in dogs and few reports of this mycosis are available in literature. Therefore, the objective of th… Show more

“…There are rare reports of infections by Candida sp. in animals that describe vascular lesions caused by the agent (ALVES et al, 2020), as seen in the present case. In humans with cerebral candidiasis, the vascular complications described include cerebral infarction, mycotic aneurysms, and subarachnoid hemorrhage (LIPTON et al, 1984).…”

“…infections are usually reported in cases of mastitis (SANTOS & MARIN, 2005), placentitis and abortion (FOLEY & SCHLAFER, 1987), and gastric lesions with diarrhea (WADA et al, 1994). Infections that result in lesions of the CNS are more frequently described in humans (PAPPAS et al, 2009) and less commonly in companion animals (ALVES et al, 2020), and rarely in cattle, in which species there is only one reported case of brain abscess by Candida etchellsii in an aborted calf, that until then was not considered a pathogenic microorganism (VILANDER et al, 2016). We here reported a case of cerebral infarction and thrombotic meningoencephalitis due to candidiasis in a calf from the semiarid region of the state of Paraiba, Northeastern Brazil.…”

“…Similarly, all cases of candidiasis in this study were considered secondary infections, with systemic mycosis being more frequent in dogs co-infected with CDV. In the host, the virus causes immunosuppression owing to the impairment of cellular and humoral immune functions, with loss of lymphocytes and leukopenia (Pressler 2015), making the animal susceptible to opportunistic infections (Frade et al 2015, Alves et al 2020a, 2020b. In the cat, prolonged antibiotic therapy favored fungal infection and the clinical triggering of the disease (Giuffrida 2016).…”

“…With IHC, six cases were positive for anti-Candida albicans polyclonal antibody. Five of these cases have been previously described by Souto et al (2016) and Alves et al (2020a).…”
