Systemic inflammation and physical function in community elderly women

Abstract

Multiple inter-related factors that contribute to the development and progression of sarcopenia in the elderly. Sarcopenia is enhanced by immunosenescence, in which the induction and expression of inflammatory mediators such as IL-6 and TNF-α increase significantly. Elevation of inflammatory cytokine levels are a predictor of mortality and morbidly in the elderly and have a catabolic effect on muscle proteins. Our studies show that there is no a cutoff point to predict adverse physical and functional outcomes, the data found are conflicting. More research is needed to clarify the role of systemic inflammation in muscle and functional performance in elderly women.
