Systemic Inflammation Persists the First Year after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Results from the Prospective Trondheim Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Study

Abstract: Innate immune activation has been attributed a key role in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and successive morbidity. In mild TBI (mTBI), however, the extent and persistence of innate immune activation are unknown. We determined plasma cytokine level changes over 12 months after an mTBI in hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients compared with community controls; and examined their associations to injury-related and demographic variables at admission. Prospectively, 207 patients presenting to the emergency depar… Show more

“…Here, we did not analyze CSF or blood biomarkers of neuroinflammation. In previous studies of mild TBI, levels of several inflammatory cytokines may be persistently elevated ( Chaban et al, 2020 ). However, the dynamics of the neuroinflammatory response to TBI and SRC have not been fully established and any contribution of the inflammatory mediators to the cognitive impairment ( Huie et al, 2019 ) should be addressed in future studies using serial CSF and/or blood sampling.…”

“…It was also intriguing that there was relatively less eotaxin-1 in preoperative samples from POD patients after stimulation by LPS, as this chemokine has been associated with cognitive decline, aging, and Alzheimer’s disease ( Huber et al, 2018 ). Interestingly, in certain contexts, such as traumatic brain injury, its level is inversely correlated with poor outcomes ( Chaban et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The sample included patients (n = 177) taking part in the extended Trondheim MTBI follow-up study, who had been examined with neuropsychological tests at 2 weeks after injury. The Trondheim MTBI Study enrolled 378 patients with MTBI between April 1, 2014, and December 5, 2015, 4 and around half were recruited to an extended follow-up study involving repeated neuropsychological testing, 37 blood sampling, 38 and brain MRI. 39 The participants were consecutively recruited from two emergency departments (EDs): St. Olav's Hospital, a regional Level 1 trauma center at Trondheim University Hospital, Norway, and Trondheim Municipal Emergency Clinic, an outpatient clinic at the hospital run by general practitioners.…”
