Abstract: Elevated serum levels of VEGF were associated with ACS. Serum cytokine expression in individuals with ACS is unrelated to periodontal conditions.

“…In this line, Allin et al observed a more favourable short‐term response to periodontal treatment in patients with lower cytokine/chemokine levels, and ZeinElabdeen et al reported lower plasma IL‐10, IL‐13, IL‐1Ra, MCP‐1, RANTES, G‐CSF and GM‐CSF concentrations in patients with aggressive periodontitis than in healthy controls . Other studies also found no association of periodontitis with TNF‐α or PCR, calling into question the role of cytokine serology as a reliable biomarker of systemic inflammation status . In advanced cognitive impairment, serum biomarkers may no longer be detectable, but could potentially be found in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).…”

“…However, studies in patients with cardiovascular disease failed to establish positive associations among periodontitis, systemic inflammation and cardiovascular disease . The most recent investigation found that a subset of 23 cytokines in sera from periodontal and non‐periodontal patients did not contribute to the diagnosis of acute ischaemic heart disease …”

“…These include diabetes mellitus,24,25 rheumatoid arthritis,25,26 and cardiovascular diseases. The increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease,27,28 hypertension,25 and stroke in periodontal disease25,29 has been attributed to a common susceptibility hypothesis, that of direct bacterial invasion of blood vessels, and/or a systemic inflammatory response leading to increased circulating cytokines that damage vascular endothelium 30. Importantly, treating periodontitis in patients with common comorbidities has shown to be an effective way of reducing both financial costs and admissions for cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus,31 lending credence to this hypothesis.…”
