Systemic metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma responsive to multidisciplinary treatment including debulking surgery

Abstract: The lung, followed by regional lymph node and bone, is the most common site for extrahepatic metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Metastatic skin lesion of HCC is rare, and it is a sign of poor prognosis, indicating the strong possibility of metastases in other regions of the body. We report the case of a 52-year-old male with multiple metastases, including skin metastasis of HCC, which were treated with multidisciplinary therapy.

“…HCC shows both intrahepatic and extrahepatic metastasis. The most common extrahepatic metastases are the lung, regional lymph nodes, peritoneum, and adrenal glands, but rarely to brain with an approximate rate of 1-6% that is associated with an extremely poor prognosis (13,14). Although the brain is not the most common site for metastatic disease for HCC, some investigators have predicted that the incidence of brain metastases will increase in the future as more patients survive longer (15,16).…”

“…Systemic metastasis is the important reason for the unsatisfactory prognosis of HCC patients [28] . Increased migratory and invasive ability of cancer cells underlies the systemic metastasis of HCC.…”
