“…Observations by image analysis that intimal Mφs in rnu/rnu rats increased in size more rapidly imply that depletion of T cells accelerated foamy transformation of Mφs in the intima. To date in vitro studies suggest that products of activated T cells, such as interferon γ, could modulate Mφs function to accumulate modified (or oxidized) lipoproteins via scavenger receptors as Mφs differentiate into foam cells 4–6 . However, reports about the role of T cells in lipoprotein metabolism in atherosclerosis are still controversial, perhaps because of the use of different experimental conditions in the various studies in vitro.…”
