METHODS:The original version of the 2007 YRBS was translated into Portuguese and back-translated into English. The questionnaire versions were analyzed by a committee of experts. The committee used semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalences as criteria of analysis. The fi nal version of the translated 2007 YRBS questionnaire was administered in two occasions, with an interval of two weeks, in a sample of 873 high school students of both sexes, in the city of Londrina, Southern Brazil, to identify the psychometric properties. Test-retest reliability was analyzed by calculating the Kappa index of agreement and prevalence rate of each type of risk behavior when application was repeated. Chi-square test was used to identify statistical differences between the fi rst and second questionnaire applications. RESULTS:After minor changes identifi ed in the translation process, the committee of experts concluded that the Portuguese version of the 2007 YRBS showed semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalences. Signifi cant differences between the prevalence rates of both applications were found in 23.4% of items. The identifi cation of 91% of items with moderate-tosubstantial Kappa index of agreement and mean value of this index of 68.6% indicated the quality of psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the 2007 YRBS. CONCLUSIONS:The translation, cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric qualities of the 2007 YRBS questionnaire were satisfactory, thus enabling its application in epidemiological studies in Brazil. Several studies have associated high cancer incidence with smoking habits. According to IARC, lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), and chromium (Cr) are carcinogenic to humans. These metals are present in cigarettes and their levels vary according to geographical region of tobacco cultivation, fertilizer treatment, plant variety etc. This study aims to assess these metal levels in cigarettes commercialized in Brazil. Three cigarettes of each 20 different brands were individually weighed, the tobacco filling removed, and homogenized. After desiccation, samples were subjected to microwave-assisted digestion. Analyses were performed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Mean levels for Pb, Cd, As, Ni, and Cr were, respectively, 0.27 ± 0.054, 0.65 ± 0.091, 0.09 ± 0.024, 1.26 ± 0.449, and 1.43 ± 0.630, in micrograms per gram of tobacco. No correlation was observed between Cd and any other metal analyzed. A mild correlation (r = 0.483, p < 0.05) was observed between Pb and Cr levels. Strong significant (p < 0.01) correlations were observed between Ni and Cr (r = 0.829), Ni and As (r = 0.799), Ni and Pb (r = 0.637), and between Cr and As (r = 0.621). Chromium and Ni levels were significantly higher in cigarettes from a multinational manufacturer. Our results show a high variability in heavy metal levels in cigarettes, representing an important exposure source of smokers and passive smokers to carcinogenic substances.

RESUMO:Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a vulnerabilidade de jovens ao consumo de álcool e tabaco e suas implicações para outras vulnerabilidades. A amostra foi constituída de 8429 jovens, entre 14 e 20 anos de idade (M=16; DP=1,48), estudantes do ensino médio de escolas públicas do Estado da Paraíba, sendo 62% do sexo feminino. Foi utilizado um questionário estruturado com 23 questões, cujos dados foram analisados através de estatística descritiva uni e bivariada. O uso de álcool e o tabaco estiveram associados a comportamentos relacionados ao uso de preservativo, ao suicídio, bem como influenciou na avaliação acerca da vida e da saúde. Percebe-se que os jovens mostraram-se vulneráveis ao uso de álcool e tabaco, sendo a percepção positiva acerca dessas substâncias um aspecto motivador para o consumo, tornando-os mais suscetíveis a outras vulnerabilidades. Palavras-chave: vulnerabilidade, jovens, álcool, tabaco, escolas públicas. ___________________________________________________________________________ ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO AND THE ASSOCIATION WITH OTHER VULNERABILITIES IN YOUNG PEOPLEABSTRACT: This study aimed at analyzing the vulnerability of young at the consumption of alcohol and tobacco, as well as the implications of that consumption in others vulnerabilities. The sample was constituted by 8429 students from public high school in Paraiba, of whom 5212 (61,8%) were females, with ages between 14 e 20 years old (M=16; DP=1,48). It was used a structured self-administered questionnaire containing 23 questions. The results were analyzed using descriptive, univariate and bivariate statistics. The use of alcohol and tobacco was associated with behaviors related to the use of condom, suicide, as well as the influence in the evaluation about life and health. It was noticed that the young have shown themselves vulnerable to alcohol, and tobacco, with positive perceptions about these substances, a motivating aspect for consumption, making them more susceptible to other vulnerabilities.
