Tailoring the Morphology and Fractal Dimension of 2D Mesh‐like Gold Gels

Abstract: As there is a great demand of 2D metal networks, especially out of gold for a plethora of applications we show a universal synthetic method via phase boundary gelation which allows the fabrication of networks displaying areas of up to 2 cm 2 . They are transferred to many different substrates: glass, glassy carbon, silicon, or polymers such as PDMS. In addition to the standardly used web thickness, the networks are parametrized by their fractal dimension. By variation of experimental con… Show more

“…Moreover, the 2D mesh-like Au hydrogels were synthesized via the phase boundary gelation method (Figure 6c). 51 Here, the aqueous solution with Au NPs was mixed with another organic solution mixture (ethanol/ toluene). Ethanol acts as a media that conveys the Au NPs into another phase, because the ethanol is soluble in both solvents.…”

“…We therefore attribute the suppression of LSPs in these networks also to a (de-structive) wave interference effect ultimately canceling the dominant dipolar coupling between various hot spots above a certain frequency (determined by the previously noted increasing "intrinsic" impact of disorder in this plasmonic AL system). This disappearance of localized modes above the threshold at the lower end of the optical spectrum explains the exceptionally large transparencies up to 97 % (in optical frequency range 443 THz -635 THz) of the Au networks [20].…”

“…2D Au networks of varying fractal dimension and coverage (0.310 -0.544) have been synthesized following the procedures described in Ref. [20]. Following the initial synthesis step and after the evaporation of the organic solvent the networks were transferred to a TEM-grid by carefully pressing the substrate onto the aqueous solution.…”
