TANGO ‐ a screening tool to identify comorbidities on the causal pathway of nocturia

Abstract: A novel all-cause diagnostic metric for identifying co-existing morbidities of clinical relevance to nocturia in patients who present across disciplines and medical specialties has been developed. TANGO has the potential to improve practice and smooth inequalities associated with a siloed approach to assessment and subsequent care of patients with nocturia.

“…Examples of nocturia‐specific questionnaires are the international consultation on incontinence questionnaire—nocturia; nocturia quality of life questionnaire, and the nocturia impact diary. In line with the diagnostic considerations from each of the relevant therapeutic areas, a questionnaire has recently been developed to help to unify approaches to nocturia diagnosis . The TANGO questionnaire is a short patient‐administered screening metric designed to help the clinician assess nocturia and diagnose these different contributory mechanisms.…”

Although some further validation is needed, the tool is available for clinical use in English and Dutch, and validation in French and Spanish is ongoing.…”

This document does not address the epidemiology, pathophysiology or treatment of nocturia or any of its sub‐categories, as that is not the main aim of the Standardisation Steering Committee (SSC) or the nocturia working group, is beyond the scope of this article, and is covered in several other publications …”

“…Clearly, the screening and diagnostic process for nocturia should include aspects of sleep onset, initial duration of restorative sleep and events that may disturb sleep (such as pain, uncomfortable breathing and efforts to achieve thermoregulation). A measure that would be helpful in identifying factors contributing to sleep dysfunction in nocturia patients has recently been described . Ideally assessment will also capture the impact of regular nocturia on day to day function.…”
