Piptadenia stipulacea is popularly known as “Jurema Branca” and is apply in empiric therapy as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, cells regenerator, antipyretic and astringent pectoral. The present work had as objective to carry out the toxicological analysis of the ethanol extract of the leaves of P. stipulacea. In vitro toxicity was performed according to the methodologies of osmotic fragility against sheep erythrocytes and genotoxicity by Allium cepa and in vivo toxicity according to the protocol of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD 423). Erythrocyte osmotic fragility presented low levels of hemolysis both by the qualitative evaluation of the supernatant and by the hemolytic percentage result. In cytotoxic evaluation with Allium cepa, no chromosomal abnormalities or differences in the cell division process (interphase, prophase, anaphase metaphase and telophase) were identified between the control group and the groups submitted to the different concentrations of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of P. stipulaceae (50μg/mL, 500μg/mL and 1000μg/mL). The ethanolic extract of the leaves of P. stipulaceae can be considered of low acute toxicity, since it did not cause the death of treated animals at the dose of 2000 mg/kg, as recommended by OECD 423. The results obtained allow to proceed with additional tests of sub-acute and chronic toxicity, biological activities on specific organisms in order to define the low risk of this plant.

A importância das plantas utilizadas como medicinais, desde aproximadamente 5000 a.C., bem como sua relevância como base para ciências Médicas e Farmacêuticas são fatos indiscutíveis. Até hoje, as plantas medicinais são utilizadas, de forma precária em comunidades carentes, mas também já são processadas pelas grandes indústrias farmacêuticas. Mediante a importância das plantas para a produção de fármacos, a grade de disciplinas do curso de Farmácia da UFAL, tem como disciplina obrigatória Botânica Aplicada à Farmácia. No entanto, já é observado, há algum tempo, certa falta de interesse dos alunos na disciplina. Com o intuito de compreender o real motivo do desinteresse dos estudantes, este trabalho realizou uma análise da relação dos discentes com o tema, para investigar o conhecimento dos graduandos a respeito das plantas medicinais e propor uma mudança na ementa da disciplina, e despertar um maior interesse por parte desses estudantes. Através da utilização de dois questionários entregues aos estudantes, foi possível coletar os dados necessários. Os resultados apresentaram diferentes opiniões dos discentes, as quais variaram desde os que consideram a disciplina interessante e importante para o curso, até os que sugeriram que a disciplina seja retirada da grade curricular. Com os dados obtidos foi possível compreender melhor a relação dos alunos com a disciplina e traçar métodos que possam deixá-la mais interessante.

The association of natural compounds isolated from medicinal plants with conventional antibiotics, both with similar mechanisms of action, have become a viable alternative strategy to overcome the problem of drug resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of tannic substances present in the bark of Anacardium occidentale and Anadenanthera colubrina against samples of Staphylococcus aureus when in combination with cephalexin. These combinations were evaluated by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). For this purpose, tannins and cephalexin were serially dissolved in distilled water at concentrations ranging from 0.976 mg/mL to 500 mg/mL and 2 mg/mL to 512 mg/mL, respectively. When combined, the compounds inhibited S. aureus growth forming halos ranging from 0.9 to 46 mm with an MIC of 7.8 mg/mL (tannins) and 4 µg/mL (cephalexin). The resulting effect of the combination of natural and synthetic substances with similar mechanisms of action presented better results than when tested alone. Thus, the conclusion is that both the tannins and cephalexin had their antimicrobial action enhanced when used in combination, enabling the use of lower concentrations while maintaining their antibacterial effect against strains of S. aureus.
