Targeting Delivery System for Lactobacillus Plantarum Based on Functionalized Electrospun Nanofibers

Abstract: With the increased interest in information on gut microbes, people are realizing the benefits of probiotics to health, and new technologies to improve the viability of probiotics are still explored. However, most probiotics have poor resistance to adverse environments. In order to improve the viability of lactic acid bacteria, polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibers were prepared by coaxial electrospinning. The electrospinning voltage was 16 kV, and the distance between spinneret and collector was 15 cm. The feed rat… Show more

“…Moreover, a strong fluorescence of these structures confirms that they are alive probiotic cells. A similar phenomenon has been reported by a previous studies (Mamvura et al, 2011 [ 26 ]; Yu et al, 2020 [ 27 ]).…”

A similar phenomenon has been reported by a previous studies (Mamvura et al, 2011 [26]; Yu et al, 2020 [27]). Furthermore, the electrospun PS nanofibers and PS/Alg material were characterized based on the SEM images (S-3400N, Hitachi, Tokyo, Japan) after gold coating (Figure 3).…”

“…Confocal laser scanning microscopy (Leica Microsystems Inc., Heidelberg, Germany) was used to evaluate the microstructure of the emulsion derived from the previous experiment, with some modifications [27]. A total of 40 µL of the fluorescent dye Nile red (0.1%, w/v) and ThT (0.01%, w/v) were mixed thoroughly to make a fluorescent stain, and 1 mL of the sample was stained.…”

“…Different compounds can be incorporated into nanofibers, including small drug molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, and cells. Lactobacillus bacteria have also been incorporated into electrospun nanofibers, with L. plantarum being the most frequently used [24][25][26][27][28]. Other Lactobacillus species have also been electrospun using different polymers, namely, agrowaste amended with poly (vinyl alcohol) for Lactobacillus acidophilus [29], poly (vinyl alcohol) and sodium alginate for Lactobacillus rhamnosus [30], poly (vinyl alcohol) for Lactobacillus gasseri [31], and Eudragit L100 and sodium alginate for Lactobacillus paracasei [32].…”
