Task profile and risk of occupational hepatitis A infection in sewerage workers

Abstract: Since task profiles and occupational exposure differ strongly within the job category of sewerage workers. evaluation of endangerment has to reflect individual task-related exposure. The task-exposure matrix developed and presented in this study is a practicable and valid instrument for exposure assessment and may be used for the exposure analysis of further biological agents in this working environment. Besides the known risk parameters age and origin, our study demonstrates a dose-response relationship betwe… Show more

“…Qualitative methodologies for EvBRs were found in scientific articles, the grey literature, and in the form of computing references. In the large majority of cases, these methods combined "workstation analysis" as the main method with "analysis by risk level" as a secondary method [64][65][66][68][69][70]72,73,77,81,82]. Two other sources included a third type of analysis, which were classed as "systemic analysis" when it related to failure-mode, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA) [69] or an "analysis of conformity" [82].…”

“…In Europe the seroprevalence has decreased rapidly during the last decades.Values of < 10% are currently observed in the younger generation. Tourists and other travelers to endemic regions [11][12][13][14], food handlers [15][16][17], sewage and (probably) sewage workers [18][19][20], and some other smaller groups are considered as risk groups. Health care workers and personnel of day care centers are also at higher risk for infections with HAV [21,22].…”

“…The virus is shed in high concentrations in the stool of acutely infected individuals and it can survive in moist environments for weeks to months. Data regarding the risk of association of HAV and sewage exposure were conflicting, with the majority denying such an association [15][16][17] . Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the most common cause of acute viral hepatitis, with a wide range of clinical manifestations, but asymptomatic infections are the most common [18] .…”
