“…Free thiols can interact with maleimide residues to form a stable carbon-sulfur bond, as demonstrated by various groups for the covalent attachment of CPPs, such as RF, LMWP, or Tat to liposomes, dendrimers, or protein-based NPs [60][61][62]. Alternatively, the high affinity of noble metals to sulfur, which derives from the soft acid-soft base interaction, can be employed for the direct linkage of sulfhydryl-containing CPPs to the surface of metal NPs, as recently demonstrated for R8 and Tat conjugation to silver, gold, and palladium NPs [63][64][65][66][67].…”

“…There are reports of a reduced hyperthermia effect when nanoparticles are located in endosomes, and reports of spontaneous endosomal escape [ 113 114 ]. For the specific treatment of cisplatin-resistant nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Weng et al [ 115 ] produced SPIONs covered with cisplatin and with TAT peptide (a HIV-derived cell penetrating peptide). Their nanoparticles had an increased endocytosis rate, which, combined with the Fenton reaction of the iron oxide core taking place in the lysosome and the cell cytoplasm, increased the cancer cell response to cisplatin and reversed the resistance of the cells to the drug [ 115 ].…”

“…Furthermore, Liu et al [113] and Weng et al [114] exploited cell-penetrating peptides to deliver Ag-Fe3O4 with DOX and Fe3O4 loaded with Pt, respectively. The proposed NPs were characterized not only by an enhanced internalization but also showed unexpected ability -mediated by ROS produced via the Fenton reaction -to reverse drug-resistance in HNE-1/DDP and CNE-2 cells.…”
