Tatura Sodicity Conference: knowledge gaps in sodicity research for major agricultural industries

Abstract: This paper summarises the outcomes of the International Sodicity Conference, ‘Sodicity Issues in Agricultural Industries — Current Research and Future Directions’, held at Tatura, Victoria, 28 February–1 March 2000. In this paper we present (i) sodicity issues generic across agricultural industries, (ii) results of the interactive workshop, and (iii) knowledge gaps identified specifically for individual agricultural industries by experienced researchers. A priority ranking was given to the key issues raised wi… Show more

“…At an international sodicity conference held at Tatura, Victoria in early 2000, numerous sodicity knowledge gaps were identified for the cotton industry, including the better prediction of clay dispersion caused by sodicity, the effects of sodicity on cotton growth, soil processes in sodic soils, the effects of using sodic irrigation water, the economic and social costs of sodicity, the efficacy of sodicity ameliorants, and the effects of sodicity on soil biota (Surapaneni et al 2002). In the following years of the AC-CRC and Cotton CRC, further work was carried out on the effects of different crop rotations and soil husbandry strategies on sodicity in various locations (e.g.…”

“…The impact of sodicity on crop production has been extensively reviewed Rengasamy 2002;Surapaneni et al 2002). Soil sodicity limits plant growth indirectly through poor physical conditions and directly as a consequence of sodium toxicity.…”
