Taxonomic revision of the Australian Eucarpiini (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Cixiidae) with the description of nine new species

Abstract: The Australian planthopper tribe Eucarpiini is revised taxonomically. Five genera are recognised in the Australia fauna: Bajauana Distant 1907, Dilacreon Fennah, 1980, Kirbyana Distant, 1906, Neocarpia Tsaur & Hsu, 2003 and Nesochlamys Kirkaldy, 1907. Except for Bajauana all of these represent new records for Australia. Eucarpia Walker, 1857 is declared absent from Australia. Twelve species, nine of which are new, are recognised in the Australian fauna: Bajauana acuminata, sp. nov., Dilacreon akethe, sp. n… Show more

“…Löcker et al (2010) reported the morphological characters of the ovipositor, the 8 th abdominal sternite, the anal segment and the anal style of N. rhizophorae . However, these characters are not effective when used to distinguish among species of Neocarpia .…”

“…Based on the description and the figures by Löcker et al (2010), this species can be distinguished from other species of the genus by the following characters: right side of periandrium with a process near apex and ventral margin of periandrium with one small triangular process at apical 1/3; flagellum with a prominent long process in the middle.…”

“…This species was subsequently transferred into the genus Bajauana Distant, 1907by Fennah (1980 as he synonymised Australoma with the latter. During a revision of the Eucarpiini (Löcker et al 2010), Bajauana praetextata was transferred into Leptolamia. This transfer increased the number of species in the genus Leptolamia to two.…”

“…Löcker et al (2010) transfered Bajauana praetextata into Leptolamia on the basis of the carination of the head, the venation of the forewing and the chaetotaxy of the 2nd hind tarsomere. The following characters support this decision: presence of a very distinct subapical transverse carina on top of the head; lateral carinae on anteclypeus absent; forewing with Sc+R+M forming a common stem, intercubitus at the same level as apex of clavus, Radius posterior trifid, 10 apical cells and 2nd hind tarsomere with 6 apical teeth.…”
