Taxonomic value of the petiole anatomy in the genus Cinnamomum (Lauraceae) found in Sri Lanka

Abstract: We assessed the petiole anatomy of 8 species of Sri Lankan Cinnamomum (C. capparu-coronde, C. citriodorum, C. dubium, C. litseaefolium, C. ovalifolium, C. rivulorum and C. sinharajaense and C. verum) belonging to the family Lauraceae using light microscopy in the petiole anatomy for identification and classification of species. This is the first report on comprehensive petiole anatomy in Cinnamomum species. The distinctive, important and key taxonomic characteristics of the petiole include the shape and outlin… Show more

“…The use of petiole characters to resolve some systematic problems in the groups cannot be overemphasized. Several works in this aspect include those of [13] in petiole anatomy in Cinnamomum, [15] in the tribe Dipterocarpeae (Diptorecarpaceae), [17] on Asteraceae among others. Nine (9) anatomical characters were assessed from the photograph images of the eighteen (18) species of Tephrosia studied as shown in Figure 1(a-r).…”

“…The peculiar, significant and key taxonomic features of the petiole in the genus Cinnamomum (Lauraceae) are the shape and outline of the petiole, presence of winged extensions, surface grooves on upper surface, presence or absence of trichomes, structure of vascular bundle and stone cell characters i.e. shape, structure, pits and fissure size are useful in identification (Abeysinghe & Scharaschkin, 2019). N. cataria has a maximum number of parallel rows of xylem vessels among the studied species.…”

“…Bentuk tangkai daun anggota Lauraceae menunjukkan ciri suku, karena adanya kesamaan pada bentuk tangkai daun yaitu busur dan busur menekuk (Moraes 2006;Kumar 2013;Serebrynaya et al 2017;Abeysinghe & Scharaschkin 2019). Metcalfe (1987) menyatakan beberapa marga dari Lauraceae juga dicirikan oleh adanya sel sekretori di beberapa organ.…”
