To act as a responsible member of a democratic society, everybody needs statistical literacy and practical knowledge on how to use statistical data, visualization, and methods. In the case of professions that use or produce statistical data the correct use of statistics and statistical thinking are also important. Practice and knowledge applicable in real life are also needed. To reach these requirements, using real-life problems, modern technologies (digital solutions, online tools) and up-to-date teaching methods tailored to the target audiences is crucial. Several papers show that the use of real problems, technology and modern teaching methods are more efficient than the traditional frontal teaching method. In this study, we describe some new teaching methods, for instance problem-based learning, project-based learning, thinking-based learning, flipped classroom, gamification, new technological devices. We also discuss the combination of different methods and modern technology in action in the field of Statistics. The paper shares our developments, experiences, and lessons we learnt from classes. One of our main results is the idea that the use of modern teaching approaches leads to more practical and applicable knowledge; however, their success also depends on both the educators’ and the students’ time expenditure and attitude.

In today's world, where there is a vast amount of information available, users must navigate through the ambiguity and evaluate viewpoints from multiple perspectives. Postgraduate students, in particular, require critical thinking skills, as merely knowing the content is inadequate. Additionally, international postgraduate students may face challenges in adapting and transferring digital skills when pursuing their studies in another country. Consequently, language learning in a digital environment has become increasingly challenging for postgraduate students who must apply their linguistic knowledge to solve problems encountered while navigating the internet. Therefore, this quantitative design study aims to determine the differences and similarities in determinant digital skills for online ESL/EFL postgraduate students in Malaysia and China. The 21 st Century Skills Scale questionnaire was utilized to collect data from 207 postgraduate students of a university in Malaysia, comprising 96 Malaysian and 111 Chinese students. Using SPSS descriptive analysis and significance test, the results indicate that Creativity and Innovation has the lowest mean score among all the other determinants. This research highlights the need for these ESL/EFL postgraduate students to possess a range of digital skills to succeed in a digital world. By identifying the differences and common traits between ESL/EFL students in Malaysia and China, this study provides insights into the challenges and opportunities for digital skills development in different cultural contexts.

As the construction industry continues to advance technologically, the adoption of sensing technologies is gradually gaining momentum. Sensing technologies (such as radio frequency identification systems, laser scanners, cameras, and global position systems) play a significant role in reducing costs, improving project productivity, and enhancing workers' health and safety. This has prompted the need for a workforce with the required skills and knowledge for deploying sensing technologies in the industry. Since construction-related education is aimed at preparing students for the future of the industry, it is important to investigate the industry’s expectations for equipping the future workforce with the required skills. This study adopts a mixed-method research approach. Data are collected from surveys, case studies, and a focus group discussion with industry practitioners. The data elucidate participants’ perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs regarding: the skills required, and level of knowledge transfer required to advance sensing technologies on construction projects, and the value and anticipated demand for these skills. The findings also revealed the extent to which sensing technologies are deployed in the industry and the benefits driving the adoption of these technologies. The results reveal a high rate of adoption of sensing technologies amongst industry practitioners and inform construction applications and skills to be taught in construction engineering education. This study contributes to the existing scarce literature on the knowledge and skill demands of the industry to implement sensing technologies. The findings provide critical feedback for expanding the construction education curriculum to meet up the industry’s demand and adequately prepare the future workforce.
