The switching between conventional learning to online learning during this pandemic quite affected the learning approach adopted by students. This study aims to determine the learning approach of the eighth-grade students at one of public schools in Bali during online learning. The mixed-method was used in this study with two instruments for data collection: the R-SPQ-2F questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. This study involved 168 eighth grade students of one public junior high school in Bali. The analysis of the mean score of R-SPQ-2F was used to evaluate the data from questionnaire, while the interactive model analysis was used to analyze the interview data. Based on the findings, the learning method of the eight-grade students in the context of online learning tends to be of deep approach. The results of the interview revealed that the student learning approach was influenced by several supporting and inhibiting factors. This shows that student learning approaches can adapt and be influenced by various factors faced by students during the learning process. These factors can come from within students and students’ learning environment. Therefore, teachers should have a better understanding of learning approaches adopted by students during online learning situations to assist students in achieving learning success.Keywords: EFL, online learning, students’ learning approach

Error Analysis on EFL Students’ Thesis Proposal Writing

The present research was intended to analyse the errors made by the university students, especially the students in the eight semesters who write thesis proposals. Hence, the main objective of the present research was to investigate types of errors as well as to know the dominant errors which were existed in students’ thesis proposal compositions. This research employed descriptive quantitative study by calculating the number of errors by percentage. There are 42 participants from English Education Department in one of public university in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The results showed that there were 195 errors consisting of 71 (36%) addition errors, 64 (33%) misformation errors, 48 (25%) omission errors, and 12 (6%) misordering errors. The most dominant errors as shown by the percentage were students tended to add more than the structure or grammar needs. Students overgeneralized to use affix –s in verb and to use double auxiliaries (be, are, is). These results suggest that the instructor needs to help students on understanding and practicing more to fix the errors.

Struktur kalimat adalah salah satu dari enam dimensi yang diukur dalam tes kecakapan bahasa standar ICAO. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap kesulitan peserta tes di area struktur ini. Melalui mekanisme korpus, sejumlah sesi wawancara tes IELP dipilih dan ditranskripsikan. Kesalahan tata bahasa kemudian dianalisis berdasar fungsi sintaksisnya. Kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut diklasifikasikan ke dalam kelas kata yaitu kata benda, kata kerja, kata sifat, kata keterangan, preposisi, konjungsi, kata seru, dan penentu. Jenis-jenis kesalahan ini kemudian diurutkan mulai dari rasio tertinggi hingga terendah. Studi ini menemukan bahwa masalah struktur pengambil tes yang paling sering terjadi selama tes IELP adalah ketika mereka berhadapan dengan kata kerja dengan rasio kesalahan 30%, kata benda dengan rasio 22% dan yang ketiga adalah kata depan dengan rasio 16%. Dari hasil tersebut, studi ini menyarankan agar pendidikan dan atau pelatihan Bahasa Inggris penerbangan dapat lebih fokus membahas ketiga area gramatika ini. Pembahasan dapat lebih ditekankan pada menyusun kalimat yang terdiri dari verba/frasa verba, frase nomina/nomina, dan frase preposisi dengat tepat.
