Technical Assessment of Renewable Sources for Energy Use in Turkey

Abstract: The aim of present article is to investigate use of renewable sources for energy in Turkey. Turkey also has a large potential for renewable energies. Turkey has a considerably high level of renewable energy resources that can be a part of the total energy network of the country. The most important renewable sources for Turkey's energy sector are solar in its various forms, wind, biomass, hydro, and geothermal. Renewable sources are the second largest source for energy production after coal. About two thirds of… Show more

“…Turkey has a gross annual hydro potential of 433 TWh/yr, which is equal to 1% of the total hydropower potential of the world and to 14% of European hydropower potential (Yilmaz, 2006). Almost half of the gross potential is technically exploitable, and only one-third of this potential is economically exploitable.…”

“…Inc, 2009). Comparing energy resources and reserves of Turkey with those of the world: coal, geothermal and hydro resources are around 1%, whereas oil and natural gas resources are at the present knowledge negligible (Yilmaz, 2006). Energy demand particularly oil and natural gas necessity is growing rapidly for social and industrial development of the country.…”

“…Comprehensive studies have been carried out concerning the present status, the technical potentials, the policies, and the regional distribution of energy resources in Turkey by many researchers (Demirbas and Bakıs, 2003;Balat, 2004;Balat, 2005a;2005b;2005c;2005d;2005e;Balat et al, 2005;Balat, 2006;Kaya, 2006;Kaya et al, 2008;Konak and Pamukcu, 2006;Kılıç, 2006;Kılıç and Kaya, 2007;Ozturk and Bascetincelik, 2006;Pamukcu and Konak, 2006;Yılmaz, 2006) and concluded that Turkey has extensive renewable energy resources that can be developed as a significant source of energy.…”
