Strategy Development and Determination of Barriers for Thermal Energy and Electricity Generation from Agricultural Biomass in Turkey

Abstract: The present work deals with determining barriers for thermal energy and electricity generation from agricultural biomass in Turkey. Strategy development and determination of barriers were investigated in accordance with the work program requirements for the project entitled ''Exploitation of Agricultural Waste in Turkey'' under the European Life Third Countries Program. The study has been organized and presented according to the following three phases: (i) market barriers for electricity and thermal energy gen… Show more

“…Careless use of energy resources and their scarcity, resulting unwanted side effects, so energy consumption must be planned and evaluated carefully and accurately. Comprehensive researches have been conducted by several authors regarding to the assessment of production and utilization of fossil and renewable energy sources in Turkey (Balat, 2004a;2004b;2005a;2005b;2005c;2005d;Balat et al, 2004;Bakıs,, 2005;Bascetincelik et al, 2009a;2009b;Bertay et al, 2004;Comaklı et al, 2008;Demirbas, 2002b;Demirbas and Bakıs,, 2003;Dursun and Gokcol, 2012;Ekinci et al, 2010;Erdem, 2010;Gucbilmez et al, 2010;Kasap and Duman, 2013;Kaygusuz, 2001;2002;Kiliç, 2005;Kiliç and Kiliç, 2006;Kırtay, 2010;Konak and Pamukcu, 2006;Ozturk and Bascetincelik, 2006;Pamukcu and Konak, 2006;Vardar and Cetin, 2007;Yılmaz, 2006a;Yüksel, 2006;.…”

“…The CHP systems have been widely recognized as a key alternative for thermal and electric energy generation because of the outstanding energy efficiency, reduced environmental emissions (Bloka and Turkenburga, 1994), and relative independence from centralized power grids. In recent years, different types of CHP systems have been used in different industries (Bascetincelik et al, 2009;Aras and Balli, 2008).…”

“…The new and renewable energy sources should be discovered and fully utilized in order to reduce growing demands on energy imports and solve energy and environmental problems within the line of sustainability policies in Turkey (Ozturk and Bascetincelik 2006;Bascetincelik et al, 2009a;. A progressive depletion of non-renewable resources gives a push for the development of renewable energy alternatives.…”

“…Many countries try to obtain alternative energy sources from agricultural products, which are the most economical and the most suitable to ecological conditions (Sun et al, 2006;Qin et al, 2009;. Turkey is the country which has this potential and ecological structure (Demirbas 2002;2003;Demirbas and Urkmez 2006;Ozturk and Bascetincelik 2006;Bascetincelik et al, 2009a;. Similarly, Erdogdu (2008) emphasized that Turkey has a substantial amount of renewable energy sources that can play a significant role to meet the total energy demand of network of the country.…”
