This study analyzes the level and determinants of technical efficiency of soybean farms in the Saboba and Chereponi districts of northern Ghana. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 200 soybean farmers from which cross-sectional data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Data collected includes farmers' socio-economic characteristics such as age and education as well as input and output quantities and prices. Data was analyzed using the stochastic frontier approach. Results showed a mean technical efficiency estimate of 53 percent and the return to scale was 0.75. Location of farm, participation in the Agricultural Value Chain Mentorship Project and age of farmer were found to be important in explaining technical inefficiency among soybean farmers. This implies that farmers in the short run can increase their production by 47 percent by adopting practices of the best soybean farms in Saboba and Chereponi districts of northern Ghana.

Technical efficiency in tilapia farming of Bangladesh: a stochastic frontier production approach

Genetically improved farmed tilapia is increasingly getting popular in Bangladesh. It has high production potential. Its dominant production technology ranges from extensive to improved extensive particularly in the rural areas. This study estimates levels and determinants of farm-level technical efficiency of tilapia farmers of Bangladesh using stochastic frontier production function involving a model for technical inefficiency effects. Data from fifty tilapia farmers of Jessore district are used in the analysis. The mean technical efficiency level of the tilapia farmers is 78%, and thus, the farmers operate 22% below the frontier production. Inefficiency effect is significant, and age, education, income, culture length, pond age, pond depth, water colour and pond tenure, as a group, are significant determinants of technical inefficiency. By operating at full technical efficiency levels, tilapia yield can be improved from the current level of 7.36-8.96 tons per hectare. The decision to add or not to add inputs is sometimes taken arbitrarily and not based on technology requirement. There is a lack of understanding of the technology practices. Fisheries extension efforts are required for proper understanding of the technology practices, further adoption and spread. For promotion of tilapia production, quality feed and seed at affordable price needs to be ensured.

This research was conducted to evaluate the efficiency level of shrimp poly-culture farms by using Data Envelopment Analysis. It also identified factors affecting the inefficiencies of shrimp poly-culture farms using Tobit regression model. The empirical results indicated that the mean of Technical, Allocative and Economic Efficiency were at 84.01%, 64.16%, 55.32%, respectively, hence there is a substantial room for improving the efficiency. DEA results recommended that inefficient farms need to minimize overfeeding of stocks in order to avoid the accumulation of uneaten feeds that further contributes to water pollution. The optimal stocking density ratio should be 8.15 for shrimps, 1.59 for crabs and 2.46 for fish per square meter of pond. The results also showed the presence of scale inefficiency. Smaller farms tend to be more efficient than larger farms. The optimal farm size should be less than 0.5 hectares. The results of Tobit regression model suggested that farm personal characteristics, farm ability to access to institutions, and water environment have significant effect on the efficiency of farms.
