Technical–tactical skill assessments in small-sided soccer games: A scoping review

Abstract: Skill assessments are essential to elite soccer coaches and clubs, to provide an evidence-based approach to player evaluation. Valid methods thereby support talent identification and development procedures (e.g. scouting and training strategies). However, it remains a complex challenge. Small-sided games have emerged as a promising tool, due to high ecological validity. Until now, no review has focused on their discriminative power. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether technical–tactical skill assessment… Show more

“…In practical terms, assessing the payers' decisionmaking, physical, tactical and technical skills, as well as other variables that are relevant in the training processes may provide relevant information to coaches (González- Víllora et al, 2015;Klingner et al, 2021). Practice situations in which the assessment contexts are similar to the real performance environment are preferable, which can be the case of SSGs, that promotes more representative environments than isolated skills testing (Klingner et al, 2021). With this purpose, there are evaluation tools that can be used in the analysis of SSGs, such as: GPAI (Oslin et al, 1998), TSAP (Gréhaigne et al, 1997), GPET (García-López et al, 2013), and FUT-SAT (Costa et al, 2011).…”

“…11 Nonetheless, it is imperative to recognize that SSG exhibits dynamism and can be subject to the influence of contextual factors and tactical behaviors that manifest during gameplay. 12 This inherent variability serves to distinguish SSG from more standardized running-based exercises. 12,13 While the benefits of devising SSG are evident and can serve as compelling motivators for players, it is important to acknowledge that there may exist inherent variability in the stimulation and outcomes attained through these specific SSG interventions.…”

“…1,2 Therefore, effective communication is important to help players to learn the strategies and tactics presented in practice. [3][4][5][6] During tactical training sessions, coaches spend most of their time giving information, instructions, or commands to athletes. 7 They also use static diagrams drawn on a tactical board to convey essential information about the game through verbal description.…”
