Techniques for the analysis of pentacyclic triterpenoids in medicinal plants

Abstract: Triterpenes are a major class of chemical compounds found in natural plants and can be categorized into acyclic triterpenoids, monocyclic triterpenoids, tricyclic triterpenoids, tetracyclic triterpenoids, and pentacyclic triterpenoids. Among them, pentacyclic triterpenoids have gained more extensive attention due to their biological activities, including anti-inflammation, antibacterial, antioxidation, antitumor, anti-HIV, hepatoprotection, and immunological adjuvant properties. In this review, we summarize th… Show more

“…Practically in all papers, one or both acids were first isolated using repetitive chromatography and identified by comparison with spectroscopic data reported in the literature [17]. Then, quantitation of both acids in the plant extract was achieved by chromatographic techniques reviewed by Xu et al [18]. Recent examples are reported below.…”

“…Identification and quantitation of the two triterpene acids in various plant extracts have been undertaken as follows: isolation of each acid by repeated chromatography, identification by spectroscopic techniques, and then quantitation by HPLC or TLC and punctually GC-MS after derivatization [18]. All these techniques are known to give accurate results but they are also time-consuming.…”

“…In this research, a total of 43 triterpenoid acids, which originated from FXZ, MBZ, WLZ, RX, and MY, have been unambiguously or tentatively identified in XJC. They have a wide range of useful biological properties including anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant, anti‐asthmatic, and anti‐tumour activities . According to the different skeleton structures, they were divided into oleanane‐(α)‐type, ursane‐(β)‐type, tirucallane‐type, and lupane‐type triterpenoid acids as well as other types .…”

“…Protostane‐type triterpenoind is an isomer of dammarane‐type triterpenoids, featuring α ‐configurations of 8‐CH 3 and 13‐H, and β ‐configurations of 9‐H and 14‐CH 3 . As characteristic constituents of the genus Alisma (Hur, Choi, & Park, 2007; Jiang et al, 2006), protostane‐type triterpenoids have a variety of functions, such as anti‐inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidation, and antitumor activities (Na et al, 2016; Xu, Wang, Pu, Tao, & Zhang, 2018; Zhang, Men, & Lei, 2014).…”
