Technological assessment of different solar-biomass systems for hybrid power generation in Europe

Abstract: Abstract:Solar Tower thermal (ST), Parabolic Trough thermal (PT), Linear Fresnel thermal (LF) and Solar PV are discussed in the context of suitability for hybridization with biomass in Europe.Technical, economical and climate data have been compared to identify the key drivers of technology selection in setting up large scale solar-biomass hybrid power plants. The sole solar-biomass hybrid power plant is currently in operation in Spain uses PT technology due to its performance characteristics, comparatively ea… Show more

“…Other papers were published in the previous SDEWES special issues in this area, investigating similar topics, namely: biodiesel production from cooking oil [121], multiple biomass corridor [122], biomass for power solutions [123], hybrid solar biomass systems [124], biofuels for marine vehicles [125], production of biosolid fuels from municipal sewage sludge [126], analysis of active solid catalysts for esterification of tall oil fatty acids with methanol [127], analysis of woody biomass in Japan [128], biodiesel production using injection of superheated methanol technology [129].…”

“…The combination of concentrated solar power (CSP) and biomass is yet another example of a larger hybrid system. It has been studied in Peterseim et al and Hussain et al Szarka et al reviewed and analyzed technical solutions based on solid, liquid, and gaseous biofuels, and found bioenergy suitable for flexible energy supply, and for offering system services with partial potential already existing. Lund and Mathiesen compared different combined heat and power (CHP) technologies using bioenergy to integrate VRE into the Danish energy system in terms of total socioeconomic costs and biomass consumption.…”

“…The evaluation results show that this integration concept provides an efficient and economical way to use the concentrated solar thermal energy. [19][20][21] In addition, the solar-powered gas turbine system integrated with the solar tower has been tested. The biomass provided the external heating source for steam superheating; therefore, constant and longer system operation can be achieved.…”

“…17,18 The technical feasibility of developing the hybrid solar-biomass power generation system or polygeneration systems was conducted. [19][20][21] In addition, the solar-powered gas turbine system integrated with the solar tower has been tested. The required compressed air was heated in the central receiver of solar tower; thereby, the concentrated solar thermal energy would achieve favorable performance by hybridizing with the advanced power cycle.…”
