Technological forecasting techniques and competitive intelligence: tools for improving the innovation process

Abstract: This paper aims at discussing some concepts regarding technological forecasting techniques (TFTs) and competitive intelligence (CI) and presents some links between them in a strategic approach based in a theoretical review. These techniques are considered as tools for improving the innovation process within firms. This paper analyzes, via a business case, how a Brazilian electronic company, Digitel SA, which produces modems and multiplexers for internal and global markets, deals with these techniques as a way … Show more

“…Garvin (1983) posited that quality improvements are unlikely to take place without specific and timely information on defects and field failures. Information is important for firms to improve and enhance their innovation process, especially for firms that operate in the technology-based arena and which struggle to survive in the current competitive marketplace (Lemos, Porto 1998). Geffen and Rothenberg (2000) and Cohen and Levinthal (1990) argued that it is important for firms to be able to identify new external information, absorb it and apply it in determining innovation capabilities.…”

“…However, the activities to increase the understanding levels of the economic impact of innovation performance have been held back by the lack of continual widespread information on various factors contributing to innovation (Loof, Heshmati 2002). As a result, information must be the blood that enables innovative firms to survive (Lemos, Porto 1998). Therefore, the following hypothesis is developed:…”

“…This study also aims to determine the emissions of stainless steel that undergo in the production process. Overall, the main objective of this study is to use the Model on Trade of Strategies by Otto and Antonsson (1991) to evaluate the design based on the design criterion of the material, product, process, material handling cost, emissions, life cycle cost, and cost-benefit analysis. Application of Value Analysis to the material, product, and process was performed.…”

“…The technology-based sector needs to acquire relevant technical information to survive in the present competitive situation. According to Lemos and Porto (1998), to improve the innovation process, Information is needed for firms in the technology-based field that needs to survive in the extreme marketplace. The fabrication Industry is one of the technology-based sectors that need relevant information to create a superior design.…”
