Telehealth: Increasing Access to High Quality Care by Expanding the Role of Technology in Correctional Medicine

Abstract: The United States (US) has a large correctional population. However, many incarcerated persons lack access to evidence-based, up-to-date medical care, particularly by subspecialty providers, due to limitations of geography, travel, cost and other resources. The use of telehealth technologies can remove these barriers, increasing access to high quality, multidisciplinary care. Studies have shown that, with telemedicine, timely triage and medical management can be provided across many disciplines, which may lead… Show more

“…[7][8][9][10][11][12] Despite many studies reporting positive clinician and patient satisfaction with telepsychiatry, 8,9,11,13,14 implementation has not been rapid, easy, or widespread. [15][16][17][18] In 2009, only about 2% of psychiatrists had used telepsychiatry in the United States. 12 Although the numbers of Medicare telemedicine visits have been increasing, less than 1% of rural Medicare beneficiaries received a telemedicine visit as of 2016.…”

“…Literature proposes the following as barriers to health for prisoners: (a) tendency to escape during travel by prison inmates, (b) the cost of security (escorts for patient assisted travel), (c) need for vigilance, etc., These can be overcome or minimized using tele-medicine thus lessening the police workforce requirement during transport and saving the travel expense while bettering the ease of specialist accessibility and reducing the waiting time for consultation. [1819] These barriers were identified and agreed on by medical officers of central prison of Karnataka and acknowledge overcoming this by collaborative tele-neuropsychiatry services.…”

“…Someone might indicate the students' participation in the study as another limitation. As has been pointed out by Young and Badowski, 31 however, academic centers can also use telemedicine for teaching and training students showing them that collaboration in research is effective and might involve state-of-the-art technologies.…”
