This case report aims to describe the conception and preliminary data of the implementation of a telescreening and telemonitoring program of covid-19 for users of the Unified Health System with risk conditions. A system of telerscreening was implemented through which undergraduate students in the health area contact patients by telephone, according to periodicity and predefined criteria, to monitor the evolution of the condition. In eight weeks, 2,190 attempts at remote contact were made with individuals from five health units. The effective number of individuals monitored at the time this writing is 802.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in the widespread implementation of teleconsultation. Teleconsultation provides remote communication and reduces the risk of virus transmission. However, patients’ perceptions and satisfaction are relevant to ensuring the quality of the service. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate patients’ perceptions and satisfaction regarding teleconsultations during the COVID-19 pandemic in Jeddah.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using an electronic questionnaire to assess patients’ perceptions and satisfaction regarding teleconsultations during May 2020. A total of 407 participants were included.Results: Most (38.6%) participants were aged 40 to 59 years, women (73.2%), and had a university education (70.8%). Patients’ perceptions of the effectiveness of teleconsultation ranged from 71.43% to 88.77% and their satisfaction level ranged between 59.40% and 83.96%. Older patients who had favorable outcomes from teleconsultation strongly agreed about the effectiveness of teleconsultation and were more satisfied. Patients with higher education levels who used the service only once were more satisfied with the experience. Moreover, those patients with greater age and educational levels and those who called for emergencies and to request medication refills were more likely to use teleconsultation in the future beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. When asked about reasons for dissatisfaction, 70% of the participants were unhappy with the wait time for a teleconsultation.Conclusions: Most patients were satisfied with the teleconsultations during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a better understanding of patients’ perceptions and reasons for dissatisfaction are fundamental in the planning and implementation of teleconsultations in Saudi Arabia.

Efficacy of telemedicine interventions for depression and anxiety in older people: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Objectives: Anxiety and depression are prevalent in the elderly and lead to loss of functionality and increased mortality. Although the use of antidepressants and faceto-face psychotherapies are indicated, the current context of telemedicine provides an alternative, with the advantage of facilitating access to care. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of telemedicine interventions to reduce anxiety and depression in the elderly through a systematic review with meta-analysis. Methods:The systematic review, through a search in 7 databases, included studies that evaluated the use of telemedicine interventions for depressive or anxious symptoms in the elderly, compared with usual care or waiting list or with another telemedicine intervention. Quantitative assessment was performed through metaanalysis.Results: A total of 31 articles identified in the search met the eligibility criteria and four were included for meta-analysis. Studies showed that telemedicine interventions are feasible and several studies demonstrated significant improvement in depressive or anxiety symptoms. Four studies evaluated the efficacy of internetdelivered cognitive behavioral therapy for depression and anxiety in older adults, compared with a waitlist, and found pooled effect sizes of −1.20 (95% CI −1.60 to −0.81) and −1.14 (95% CI −1.56 to −0.72), respectively, with low heterogeneity.Conclusions: Telemedicine interventions can be an alternative for the treatment of mood and anxiety symptoms in the elderly. However, more studies are needed to prove their clinical effectiveness, especially in countries with lower incomes and diverse culture and education.
