Telemetric monitoring of bladder function in female Göttingen minipigs

Abstract: These authors contributed equally to this work. ObjectivesTo generate real-time radio-telemetric urodynamic reference data of maximum detrusor pressure (P det max ), maximum flow rate (Q max) and estimated grade of infravesical obstruction, as well as duration of detrusor contraction (DOC), in female G€ ottingen minipigs and to describe translational aspects of the use of G€ ottingen minipigs for urological research. Materials and MethodsA telemetric transmitter was implanted into five female G€ ottingen minip… Show more

“…A similar approach has been reported in beagle dogs 10 or in minipigs. 11 If such telemetric techniques can be applied to small animal models in which pathophysiological conditions such as interstitial cystitis or chronic bladder pain symptoms could be induced, this would represent a unique tool for in vivo pharmacology studies, and for a better understanding of micturition behaviors.…”

“…Pressure measurement instruments can be placed either within the bladder lumen or in the bladder submucosa. Intraluminal devices might require an opening of the bladder mucosa and carry the risk of calculus formation 18 . Submucosal implantation avoids direct contact with urine, which reduces the risk of encrustation while placing tissue overlying the sensing membrane of the pressure microchip 11 .…”

“…This monitoring was also done prior to and after each operation as well as the termination of the experiment to evaluate the bladder function. Proof of the time point and volume of the micturition was ensured by video monitoring (Mobotix, Langmeil, Germany) and an urological flow meter consisting of a scale with a collecting vessel and corresponding software (Flow, Laborie, Montreal, Quebec, Canada) as described elsewhere [36]. …”
