Telephone contact to improve adherence to dual antiplatelet therapy after drug-eluting stent implantation

Abstract: A simple approach of four telephone calls to patients after DES implantation significantly improved 1-year drug adherence to near-perfect scores. Persistence of DAT was also significantly improved by the intervention.

“…14 Reasons for the increased drug adherence in the active group may due to a combination of the additional features, such as reminders and educational modules. [22][23][24] In our study of 174 patients during a 6-month period following an MI, we were able to detect a significant difference in patient non-adherence score and treatment gaps between the two groups in favour of the interactive patient support tool, despite a high ticagrelor adherence in both study groups. The positive effect of patient support in our study is consistent with that in other studies on antiplatelet drug treatments, in prospective randomized settings.…”

“…It concluded that the intentional non-adherence can be due to complex regimes (15) , the large number of medicines that the elderly have to take, among other factors, namely cognitive deficit, difficulty in opening the distributors/ packaging of medication and memory problems. Other international Studies (16)(17)(18) concluded that, in order to avoid forgetfulness, which increases non-adherence to treatment, the health care professional could use reminders such as voice mail and telephone counseling. Informatics has tools that may facilitate the process, and so the applicability of measures should be careful, considering the literary knowledge of the population as well as their access to these means.…”

“…The protocol of the trial was based on randomized selection. Whether these results could be implemented broadly, particularly in patients with ACS, is worthy of further investigation [54].…”
