Telepresence Mobile Robots Design and Control for Social Interaction

Abstract: Human-robot interaction has extended its application horizon to simplify how human beings interact with each other through a remotely controlled telepresence robot. The fast growth of communication technologies such as 4G and 5G has elevated the potential to establish stable audio-video-data transmission. However, human-robot physical interactions are still challenging regarding maneuverability, controllability, stability, drive layout, and autonomy. Hence, this paper presents a systematic design and control a… Show more

“…Finally, some test scenarios were run with the robot so that its real behavior could be determined, which were predicted to prove roughly similar to the desired behavior. This proposed approach differs from previous approaches [16,17] in many ways. The proposed approach is a controller-based approach, rather than one based on big data.…”

“…It required entirely new control electronics to be developed. The robot utilized the powerful direct current (DC) motor TruckPuller3 7.2 V for the drive and the powerful model-equipped servo motor HiTec HS-5745MG for steering [16]. The drive motor was equipped with an optical position encoder from the company M101B MEGATRON Elektronik AG & Co. [17], which the speed and direction can determine.…”

“…Telepresence creates a virtual or simulated environment of the real experience” for the robot operator. A telepresence robots (TPR) is a remote-controlled movable wheeled device which is equipped with cameras, speakers, microphones, a screen, sensor-assisted motion control and other interactive features, which are especially designed for communicating and collaborating remotely (Kristoffersson et al , 2013; Tuli et al , 2021; Vaughn et al , 2015). A remote user can log into the robot to control it via computers, tablets or smartphones while experiencing the on-site surroundings on the screen.…”

“…However, the social dimension and level of interaction as well as several psychological and pedagogical aspects of interactions with TPRs are not clear and have been little discussed in the literature (Bamoallem et al , 2016; Cha et al , 2017; Gallon et al , 2019; Lei et al , 2022; Newhart et al , 2016; Schouten et al , 2022; Tuli et al , 2021).…”

“…In particular, social robots have been rising in popularity as a domain merging several areas of research, from robotics and artificial intelligence to human-machine interaction and social behavior. The applications of social robots have been envisioned in a diversity of fields [68], from medicine [1,2] to care and assistance [3,4,69], telepresence [5,6], children companionship [7,8], and education [9][10][11][12][13][14]65].…”
