TEM-187, a New Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase with Weak Activity in a Proteus mirabilis Clinical Strain

Abstract: A Proteus mirabilis clinical strain (7001324) was isolated from urine sample of a patient hospitalized in a long-term-care facility. PCR and cloning experiments performed with this strain identified a novel TEM-type ␤-lactamase (TEM-187) differing by four amino acid substitutions (Leu21Phe, Arg164His, Ala184Val, and Thr265Met) from TEM-1. This characterization provides further evidence for the diversity of extended-spectrum ␤-lactamases (ESBL) produced by P. mirabilis and for their potential spread to other En… Show more

“…La presión selectiva de los antibióticos por uso masivo en los últimos 70 años ha contribuido a la diversificación genética de los genes de resistencia, como puede verse en el número actual de beta-lactamasas TEM, al menos 187 descritas 35 , cuando en 1982, antes de introducirse en la clínica las cefalosporinas de tercera generación, solo se conocían TEM-1 y TEM-2.…”

“…Recent studies have shown that the problems of treating Proteus infections are linked to a growing number of strains resistant to antibiotics. In various countries of the world, studies of the resistance of protei to antimicrobial agents prove the proliferation of Proteus -producers of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (Cremet et al 2011, Schmiemann et al 2012, Corvec et al 2013, Chen et al 2015.…”
