Temperature Dependence of Magneto-rheological Materials

Abstract: The properties of magneto-rheological (MR) materials are temperature dependent. Compared to MR fluids, MR greases (MRGs) are more sensitive to temperature due to their inherent behavior of carrier materials. In this study, MRGs are studied to examine the temperature effect on their yield stress and apparent viscosity. Experimental data are obtained for magnetic fields ranging from 0.14 T to 0.53 T and temperatures ranging from 10°C to 70 °C. It is observed that temperature has a significant effect on the field… Show more

“…Rheological measurements were performed using an Anton Paar (MCR 301) rheometer with a MR cell using parallel plate geometry with a plate diameter of 20 mm (MRD 180). This system is often used for MR measurements . The samples had a diameter of 20 mm, either dictated by the mold size or obtained by die cutting.…”

“…Spaggiari researched the effect of pressure on shear yield stress [14]. Wang and Sahin investigated the effect of temperature on shear yield stress [15,16]. As reviewed above, there is still lack of systematic analysis on the effect of the particle characteristics and application temperature.…”

“…Clearly, this special kind of thermal sensitive characteristic not only reduces the sentimental defects of the traditional MRFs but also supplies a feasible way for multifunctional MR materials. Actually, the previously reported grease-based MR materials also exhibits such a thermal responsive MR behavior [73,74]. Although the physical state of the MR grease has not been demonstrated in the manuscript, it was estimated to be a kind of MRP with a small starting storage modulus, because the authors have claimed that this product had a strong solid-like structure rather than a fluid-like structure under external magnetic field.…”
