TEMPO-media oxidation combined with laccase for effective degumming pretreatment of hemp fibers

Abstract: TEMPO-media oxidation and laccase have been successfully used in fiber degumming, but the combination of the two methods in the hemp degumming process has not yet been reported. In this paper, an alternative and efficient way for the pretreatment of hemp degumming was proposed as a combination of TEMPO-media oxidation with laccase and was a TEMPO-laccase system. A chemical composition analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were… Show more

“…Hemp in the individual fiber state is unsuitable for spinning due to its low strength and short length (12-25 mm), which limited its further application (Liu et al 2017). Researchers have proposed that part of the gum compositions should been retained to link single fiber as a technical fiber, which can get a certain length of the fiber bundle and be capable of spinning (Sadrmanesh et al 2019).…”

“…13,14 Successful degumming technology requires the removal of the gummy materials to a proper level, namely, improving the fineness and hand feeling of fiber by removing excessive gummy materials without causing much damage to the degree of polymerization (DP) value or the tenacity of the fiber. 1,[15][16][17] Researchers have devoted many efforts to developing excellent degumming methods, and several typical degumming methods have been established. Zhang et al 4 conducted flax SFT semi-degumming with gas phase ozone treatment, and prepared flax fiber with about 10 cN and a DP value of about 800.…”
