With ongoing economic and social development, natural habitats are becoming increasingly fragmented, blocking habitat connections and reducing landscape connectivity. The study of changes in ecological connectivity can provide valuable information for habitat and landscape restoration, which are necessary for sustainable regional development. Despite the growing interest in this issue, studies that reveal the change in ecological connectivity in the compounded areas of ecological vulnerability and deep poverty are still lacking. In this paper, one of the most underdeveloped and ecologically fragile southwestern ethnic regions of China, the Sanzhou region of Sichuan Province, was the study area. Based on a vector map of current land-use status and vector data on ecosystem factors and nature reserves in 2010 and 2015, the change in ecological connectivity was analyzed using the minimum cumulative resistance model using GIS spatial analysis method. Firstly, ecological sources were identified based on the distribution of ecological functional areas. Secondly, the ecological resistance surface based on ecosystem service value is revised by integrating the three dimensions of topography and hydrology, ecological environment and development, and utilization intensity. Finally, the ecological connectivity of ethnic areas in southwest China in 2010 and 2015 was compared and analyzed through the perspective of ecological resistance. The results show that: (1) From 2010 to 2015, the overall ecological connectivity decreased. (2) There were six areas of high ecological resistance featuring human activity and ecological degradation: the Anning River Valley in Liangshan Prefecture, Ganzi, Dege and Luho counties in Ganzi Prefecture, and Ruoergai and Hongyuan counties in Aba Prefecture. (3) Low ecological resistance areas were more numerous and widely distributed, forming an ecological protection barrier for the three autonomous prefectures, and regulating and protecting their natural environments. It is necessary to maintain and strengthen this protection; accordingly, measures are proposed to improve ecological connectivity. This study provides a reference for achieving ecological security and harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in this region.

A Comprehensive Evaluation Model for Local Summer Climate Suitability under Global Warming: A Case Study in Zhejiang Province

In the context of global warming, how to measure summer climate suitability at a local scale is important for meteorological services. Considering meteorological and ecological conditions, body comfort, and the atmospheric environment, an assessment method for summer climate suitability for Zhejiang Province is proposed. In this paper, a summer suitable index (SSI) for Zhejiang is calculated, including four secondary indices: a summer cool index (SCI), a comfort days index (CDI), a good air days index (GADI) and a vegetation cover index (VCI). Using a local evaluation criterion, summer climate suitable areas are distinguished objectively according to the SSI. The results show that especially suitable regions account for 4.97% of Zhejiang province, very suitable regions account for 22.2%, suitable regions account for 39.58%, and general regions account for 33.25%. The summer climate suitable areas are located mainly in high mountains and hills and coastal island areas while plain areas cannot be considered a suitable destination for summer tourism. By comparison and discussion, the SSI is demonstrated to capture summer climate suitability well. In contrast to a fixed evaluation index, benchmark values obtained for the SSI depend on the local climate and the index is straightforward to apply.

Background In recent years, accelerated urbanization, accompanied by rapid economic growth, has substantially influenced the ecological environment and carbon storage. To examine the relationship between urbanization and carbon storage, the vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) of the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan urban agglomeration (CZT) over the past two decades was estimated using the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford approach model. The multiyear spatiotemporal evolutionary characteristics of NPP changes and their responses to urban expansion were explored using various trend analysis methods. Results From 2000 to 2020, a fluctuating and moderate declining trend in the yearly average NPP was observed. In particular, after 2008, there was a noticeable acceleration in the rate of NPP decline, which was attributed to the implementation of the urban integration policy in the CZT. Furthermore, an increasing trend in NPP was noted in the core of the built-up region, which was attributed to the government's efforts toward urban greening. However, with the continuous outward expansion of the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan region, a considerable reduction in NPP was observed in the suburbs. Future variations in NPP for most parts of the CZT will be contrary to those observed in the past. The primary factors influencing NPP changes in the CZT have gradually shifted from natural factors to human activities. Although a weak negative correlation was observed between the built-up area density and NPP in 63.04% of the CZT and urban expansion predominantly negatively affected vegetation NPP, the positive contribution of human activities to NPP still outweighed the negative contributions. Conclusion Measures to protect the ecological environment have effectively mitigated the reduction in vegetation carbon storage within urban agglomerations. This study provides a rigorous theoretical basis for the integrated development of urban expansion and environmental protection, as well as for carbon management.
