Temporal and spatial stratification for the estimation of nocturnal long-term noise levels

Abstract: Noise pollution in cities is mainly caused by the vehicular traffic but, depending on the place under assessment, it could be affected by the land use. For noise assessment and strategic noise mapping, the night period equivalent level (L night ), which evaluates sleep disturbance, is one of the requirements of the European Directive 2002/49/EC to be presented for the equivalent time of one year. This research aims to find the influence of the land use in the weekdays stratification to improve the accuracy of … Show more

“…Thus, to improve the temporal sampling process, several techniques have been proposed to estimate long-term noise levels from short-term measurements (Safeer et al, 1972;Gaja et al, 2003;Ng and Tang, 2008;Romeu et al, 2011;Brocolini et al, 2013;Prieto and Barrigón, 2015;Prieto et al, 2016;Quintero et al, 2018). For the spatial sampling, many ways reduce the amount of sampling points through street classifications have also been proposed (Barrigón Morillas et al, 2005;Romeu et al, 2006;Zambon et al, 2016;Jiménez et al, 2008;Quintero et al, 2019).…”

“…On-site measurements of traffic noise require the use of many resources (personnel and measurement equipment) since an expert must record noise levels at several sampling points for long periods. Thus, some procedures to minimize the number of measurement points have been proposed [4][5][6][7].…”

“…To create a noise map based on measurements, the levels shown in the noise map must be representative, which requires having a large amount of data in both the duration of the measurements [1][2][3][4] and in sampling sites [5,6]. The measurement equipment should fulfill minimum requirements regarding its accuracy which makes more expensive the sampling process.…”
