Temporary suspension of visiting during norovirus outbreaks in NHS Boards and the independent care home sector in Scotland: a cross-sectional survey of practice

Abstract: Implementation of TSV in Scotland is inconsistent, with variation in the use of criteria, personal beliefs, and professional judgements. Further research on the role of visitors in transmission and service-user acceptability of TSV is required for policy development.

“…A growing number of recent studies verified that the spread of various infectious diseases can be decreased by reducing the risk of hospital infection and exposure, thus reducing the risk of cross infection in hospitals. 7,8 Thus, infection surveillance and risk factor analysis are among the most important prerequisites for the prevention and treatment of nosocomial bacterial infection, which are the demands for both infected and non-infected patients. Herein, we aimed to explore the exposure of risk factors and its impact on the incidence of nosocomial bacterial infection in the patients through analyzing the surveillance data of those with suspected and confirmed COVID-19 in a designated tertiary hospital, which may contribute to the prevention and control of nosocomial bacterial infection in patients with COVID-19.…”

“…Earlier work from Stage 1 15 showed that the use of TSV was inconsistent in Scotland, and this arose, in part, due to a lack of a national policy on TSV and also due to concern around potential public response to this measure. These findings have demonstrated that, as part of an overall norovirus control policy, TSV would be acceptable to patients, visitors and the wider public.…”

“…A three-stage sequential mixed-method study was used. 14 Stage 1 described current TSV implementation in Scotland, 15 and Stage 2 16 involved Nominal Group Technique 17 discussions with seven groups of service users and clinicians to elicit and rank-order situational and contextual factors that might make TSV during norovirus outbreaks more or less acceptable. Group discussions were structured around a theoretical framework drawn from the Health Belief Model 18 [i.e.…”

“…No visitors are allowed during the outbreak. Our ward delivers fully consistent remote video for visitors to reduce the emotional impact and minimize the risk of potential infection within family members [8][9][10][11][12][13] , should be observed and recorded. Importantly, the respiratory symptoms including cough, sputum cough, chest tightness, dyspnea and cyanosis should be payed much attention to.…”
