Aim:The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) among university students.Objectives:The etiology of TMD is of multifactorial, and our study is designed to assess the prevalence of TMD in an institution within a university. Various parameters including trauma, malocclusion, stress assessment - its correlation with the timing, the duration of TMD in meeting the deadlines, and examinations have been assessed.Materials and Methods:A standard questionnaire-based study with modified Fonseca anamnestic index is used. The questionnaire study was conducted with a statistically calculated sample size of 402 students within a university. The data were analyzed statistically for significance and correlations. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS for Windows release 14.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Differences at the 5% level were accepted as being statistically significant.Results:TMD and its associated symptoms are frequent among students of health and science studies. Female predominance is seen. There was also an increased prevalence of symptoms in people who described themselves as being tense. The relationship between orthodontic therapy and TMDs were also evaluated, and the duration of therapy is found to be significant. There was a significant association between history of trauma and presence of TMDs.Conclusions:TMD and its associated symptoms are frequent among students of health and science studies. A simple anamnestic index is of use in identifying and classifying temporomandibular joint and TMD symptoms in patients according to the severity of the disorder. Females showed a greater prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD than males. Longitudinal studies are recommended to identify and follow-up the prevalence and health-care needs of patients with TMDs.

Background: Temporomandibular joint Disorder (TMD) are a type of musculoskeletal disease that affects masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and other structures in the oro-facial area. Functional disturbance, facial deformities, headache and TMJ pain are all common symptoms. TMD influences the oral health related quality of life (OHRQL). Therefore, early detection aid in successful intervention and treatments. This observational study aimed to investigate TMD' prevalence among the general Saudi population and their knowledge and awareness levels. Methodology: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted through an online self-evaluated questionnaire to assess the knowledge and awareness level of the Saudi population in the 13 central regions between July 2022 -Nov 2022 toward TMD. All statistical analysis was done using the "Microsoft Office Excel software" program and "IBM SPSS Statistics" version 20 program. Results: The study included 1580 participants, 72.26% of them were men and 27.4% of them were females. 97.8% of study participants were Saudi. 45.5% aged between 21-30 years old. 31.5% of participants do not have TMD, 41.5% have mild TMD, 19.3% had moderate TMD and 7.8% have severe TMD. Conclusion: Temporomandibular joint Disorder is a complicated process with varying prevalence rates in different populations. According to our investigation, the adult population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a comparably high prevalence of TMD. Public health programs should prioritize increasing patient and medical staff understanding of TMD.

The aim of the present study was to find the prevalence of temporomandibular disorder by Helkimo anamnesis and clinical dysfunction index and to determine the degree of associations present between temporomandibular disorder and each of age, gender and anxiety.Methods: 230 students were randomly selected with the age group of 18-25 years, from all colleges of Hawler medical university, from March 2019 to June 2019. Data was collected through Helkimo anamnesis dysfunction index 1 , Helkimo clinical dysfunction index 1 and generalized anxiety disorder 7-item scale 2 . The data were statistically analyzed by Descriptive statistics and chi square test. Results:The most encountered symptoms reported by the students were joint sounds (27.4%) and joint fatigue (27.4%). (50%) of the students had some grade of temporomandibular disorder according to Helkimo anamnesis questionnaire (subjective temporomandibular disorder symptoms) and (57.4%) had some grade of temporomandibular disorder According to Helkimo clinical dysfunction index (objective temporomandibular disorder symptoms). The associations between temporomandibular disorder and each of age (P-value= 0.900), Gender (P -value= 0.221), and anxiety (P-value= 0.288) were statistically not significant by using Helkimo anamnesis questionnaire. Significant association was found between temporomandibular disorder and each of gender (P-value <0.001) and anxiety (P-value <0.001) by using Helkimo clinical dysfunction index. Conclusion:In conclusion, the prevalence of temporomandibular disorder was high. The most common symptom reported by students were joint sounds and joint fatigue. According to Helkimo clinical dysfunction index temporomandibular disorder was more prevalent among females and those who had a degree of anxiety.
