Terrestrial Macrofungi of Illinois Old-Growth Prairie Groves

Abstract: ABSTRACT.-Macrofungi from two old-growth prairie grove remnants in the Midwestern United States (Brownfield and Trelease Woods. Champaign Co., IL ) were surveyed over two summer and fall fruiting periods. Communities of Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes and Myxomycètes were sampled and compared using multivariate statistical analyses. Standard estimations of species richness were calculated for comparison with other studies of fungal diversity. Environmental factors (rainfall, humidity, air temperature and soil temp… Show more

“…The study was 76.54% successful in making an inventory of the macrofungal species within the delimited study sites, as estimators suggest that at least 19 more species fruit in the region. The Chao 2 value was considered for total species richness estimation (Schmit, Murphy, and Muller 1999) as in our case, when the sample numbers were small and most of the taxa were rare, it is known to more reliable and accurate (O'Dell, Lodge, and Mueller 2004;Hustada, Meinersb, and Methvenb 2011).…”

“…Both vegetative communities and animals influence the macrofungal habitat in the forest ecosystem (Crabtree et al, 2010;Hustad et al, 2011), especially the core giant panda habitat, and in turn, the macrofungi are the essential decomposers that maintained regional ecological balance for plants and animals living. The diversity of the macrofungal community reflects the environmental conditions in the region.…”
